Mythbusting: Are the Israeli settlements on the West Bank legal?

We hear so much about the settlements and the Palestinian Authority say all further construction are a major impediment to further negotiations.  Here is an easy introduction to the problem and gives a fresh perspective on the legality of new settlement construction.

Here is the ICJ’s opinion: which says Israel shouldn’t have driven Jordan from the land it conquered in 1948 as it is a “High Contracting Party” (HCP) under the Geneva Convention.  HCPs aren’t allowed to take land from one another under the Fourth Geneva Convention.  According to ICJ, Jordan broke no international law because when it conquered those lands, because Israel wasn’t a “High Contracting Party” since Israel at that time was only a day old.
