Mr Shlomo Behaim,

on behalf of the JNF (Jewish National Fund), presents an evening talk on two topics:

“Jewish Rights to the Land of Israel”

What are Jewish rights to the Land of Israel from the perspectives of the Tanach (Old Testament), History and world opinion?

And

“Restoring the Land of Milk and Honey:

The Development of Agriculture in Israel”

Agriculture has transformed Israel. In 1948 it was a land that was often rendered untillable by deforestation, soil erosion and neglect. Today over 95% of the nation’s food requirements are supplied by its own horticultural industry. In recent times technology has played an important role in increasing production yields. The fruit of the land is abundant once more.

The JNF is a non-profit organization and was established in 1901. They have planted an estimated 240 million trees throughout the land of Israel, and have built 180 dams and reservoirs, developed 250,000 acres of land and established more than 1000 parks.

This talk is brought to you in association with the

Jewish National Fund

and

New Zealand Friends of Israel

Behold the Man: In search of the Historical Jesus
Oct 8 @ 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM

TWO MILLENNIA ago the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate derisively declared, “Ecce Homo” – “Behold the Man!” Today Christians around the world are being quickened to look afresh at the Jewish Sage, Jesus of Nazareth. With the restoration of Israel, the remarkable advances in archaeological discoveries and biblical studies, and the unprecedented cooperation of Jewish and Christian scholars investigating the Hebraic background to the life and teachings of Jesus – all this gives fresh and impressive glimpses into his life.

“Behold the Man!” is a 12-part bible study that reconstructs the historical and cultural context in which Jesus lived. This study is ideal for those just starting out in understanding the Hebraic roots of Christianity.

The study is written by Dr Dwight Pryor, founded the Centre for Judaic-Christian Studies in 1984 and served as its president until his death in 2011. He was a founding board member of the Jerusalem School of Synoptic Research in Israel. Dr Pryor held a Bachelor of Arts degree, with Special Distinction, in Philosophy from the University of Oklahoma, extensive postgraduate studies in Philosophy and Judaism from the University of Texas, and a Doctor of Divinity degree from the Centre for the Study of Biblical Research.

The study will be held every Wednesday, beginning on 21 May at 7.30pm at 5 Oaktree Lane, Bishopdale, Christchurch. The subsidised workbook will cost $10 per copy. Call 359 7937 or (027) 433 9745 for more details.

Jewish International Film Festival: Auckland @ The Bridgeway Cinema, Auckland
Nov 16 all-day

JIFFJIFF 2014 brings you Australian premieres of the cream of the new crop of Israeli and Jewish-themed films. In this year’s program there are 43 major international festival award winners and audience pleasers.

The cinema remains a sacred place. In the dark, without external distractions, we can put ourselves in the shoes of the characters on screen and share an experience with our fellow cinema-goers. We may share the same, joyous ride or have an entirely different response.

Once the lights come up we can celebrate or argue together.
A film-festival is an opportunity to challenge the routine of our thoughts on politics, religion, news and whom we choose to sit next to! So dive into the program. Enjoy the obvious hits as well as the smaller, hidden gems.

We are thrilled to launch JIFF in Perth, the Gold Coast and Auckland.

If you have missed any films from festivals past, enjoy our new Video on Demand (VOD) service.

Stay tuned for our Holocaust Film Series in March 2015, which will feature more than 30 Australian premiere feature films and documentaries.

Thanks to all our generous sponsors and friends. Thanks to our JIFF team and in particular Festival Manager Tamar and my partner Lindy.

— Eddie Tamir, Festival Director
