Guta Goldstein: June 2016

27956517915_bb987c6c09_m

In June 2016, thanks to Esther Haver of the Jewish Federation we were honoured to have Guta Goldstein share her story to our members.

Unfortunately not everybody could make it that night and so we were pleased to video her presentation so that you can still watch it.

If you would like to download her video presentation please click here.  This is a low resolution version which takes around 110MB of disk space.  If you would like the higher resolution 720P version which takes up over 2GB, then you may request it by email to contact@nzfoi.org.

Fundraiser: Telling Israel’s story on NZ Campuses

21859839228_e968caaf03_m

Great news.  We are pleased to advise that Naftali and Raphael are returning to NZ to support the Canterbury Hebrew Congregation over the High Holidays.  You may recall that despite much opposition, we successfully assisted with organising an event at Victoria University, where they were able to talk about their experiences during the 2014 Gaza War and answer questions about Israel’s stance toward the Palestinians.

Later in 2016, we are planning on holding similar events on other campuses.

We are currently fundraising up to NZD 2,000 to help pay for travel and accommodation costs.  You can support them by donating towards this worthy project.

Snap request: Translator needed for Invercargill Sept 30

TRANSLATOR NEEDED FOR INVERCARGILL COURT HEARING TOMORROW AFTERNOON

We know this is High Holiday season, but unfortunately we have a matter that has arisen 10 minutes ago which needs urgent attention.

We have been approached about finding an Israeli translator for a hearing in the Invercargill District Court tomorrow afternoon.

The defendant is an Israeli national with poor English. They want the translator to translate the proceedings so that the Israeli is able to understand what is going on. He has been charged with assault.

They have already tried translating via Skype but apparently the translator found it difficult to understand the defendant who doesn’t speak very clearly.

We’ve tried the Embassy but they are closed for the Holidays.

The court is prepared to pay for their time and reasonable travel expenses.

Please contact us via contact@nzfoi.org or +64 (27) 433 9745 if you or you know someone who can help.

Thanks in advance

SEPT 30, 10AM UPDATE:

Thanks to everyone who replied.  We were able to find someone but the timing is going to be tight as the hearing is at 2pm.  Great result under the circumstances.  Second win for the week.  Woohoo.

NZFOI Public Statement on the Israel-Gaza Conflict July-August 2014

Gaza-RocketNZFOI’S PUBLIC STATEMENT ON THE ISRAEL-GAZA CONFLICT JULY-AUGUST 2014

AUGUST 5, 2014

New Zealand Friends of Israel (NZFOI) is horrified by the parade of wounded, dying or dead Palestinian women and children across our television screens since the beginning of the latest war in Gaza.

We are appalled  that the death of three Israeli teenagers and 1 Arab teenager should spiral so quickly into full blown war.  NZFOI is deeply concerned by reports that Hamas is illegally using civilians as human shields.

We are disturbed that Hamas has been storing munitions in UN schools and carrying out operations from within hospitals.  The suffering of civilians and the loss of their homes is heart rending.

On the other hand, the barrage of rockets indiscriminately being fired into Israel must be stopped.  Though relatively ineffective against Israel’s defences, they are nonetheless deadly if they are allowed to reach their intended targets.

We understand that Israel must do what it must to stop the barrage of rockets and to prevent terrorist incursions using underground tunnels to cross the border.

Urban warfare will result in civilian casualties and that the historical ratio of civilian to combatant casualties in all conflicts around the world since WW2 is near 3:1.  As yet we do not know what the final ratio might be in Gaza, but we urge everyone to be slow in jumping to conclusions.

In time of war, all news coming from a war zone can be and often is subject to censorship. Only pictures of civilian casualties are emerging from Hamas controlled Gaza.  All civilian deaths in Gaza are being attributed to Israel.

This is not the full picture.  This conflict is not just a war of physical violence but also a manipulative war for hearts and minds.

We are also sickened that pro-Palestinian rallies around the world have sparked many anti-Semitic acts.  Slogans rarely heard since Nazism held power, are being openly chanted.

Synagogues and Jewish stores have been attacked.  Jews have been beaten in the streets.  Jews once more are afraid of being seen in public.

The world has not learnt from the Holocaust.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been wounded or have suffered the loss of a loved one through this conflict. We pray that it will draw to a swift and peaceful conclusion.

Hidden Child: Daniel Gold tour August 2014

Daniel Gold

Daniel Gold with his father shortly after WWII

Over the last 3 years NZ Friends of Israel has collaborated with the Jewish Federation of New Zealand to bring Holocaust survivors to speak to New Zealand High School students.

Work is well underway on this year’s tour.

Professor Daniel Gold is this year’s Holocaust survivor.

Daniel Gold was born in Šiauliai, Lithuania in 1937. In 1941, the Germans occupied Lithuania, and the Jews of Šiauliai were enclosed in a ghetto. In 1943, “Aktions” were carried out in all the ghettos aroundLithuania. All the old and weak people, and also the children were rounded up and sent to their deaths. Parents tried to hide the children, but only a very few remained undetected. Among them were Daniel and few of his cousins. In the summer of 1944, just a few days prior to the liquidation of the ghetto and the dispatch of all survivors to concentration camps, his aunt and uncle escaped, taking with them their two sons, another cousin and Daniel. They found refuge with a Lithuanian peasant family, where they lived in hiding, under extremely cramped conditions, until their liberation by the Russian army in late fall of 1944. In 1946, Daniel was reunited with his father in Germany after his father was liberated from Dachau concentration camp by the American army in 1945. Daniel’s mother perished.

In 1952, Daniel and his father left Europe for Israel. There, Daniel’s life story took a remarkable turn. He served in the Israeli Air Force as a pilot during the Six Day War, the War of Attrition, the Yom Kippur War, and the first Lebanon War. He served as a reserve pilot for several decades. At a later stage in his life, Daniel joined the academia, attaining the position of a Professor of Medical Microbiology. Although retired for the last eight years, he continues to teach medical students on a voluntary basis. Likewise, he also served voluntarily for several at the Israeli police as a traffic policeman
