CHRISTCHURCH: Taking Stock: A discussion on how October 7 has affected NZ

The October 7 attack on Israel has had a huge impact on the world.  New Zealand has not been immune:

  • Antisemitism commonly expressed in public
  • An Israeli tourist has been hospitalised
  • Jewish children are being bullied for being Jewish at school
  • The New Zealand government has joined other countries in condemning Israel’s conduct
  • Jewish students are being intimidated and abused on New Zealand university campuses
  • Families have been split and often can’t discuss it because feelings run so high
  • New Zealand Friends of Israel has received numerous death threats
  • Israel’s supporters have had their information kiosks attacked
  • Israeli documentaries are boycotted and attendees intimidated as they enter theatres
  • Pro-Palestinian supporters have attempted to entrap Pro-Israel supporters by goading them into violent acts
  • Jews are choosing to hide their identities from public view

You are invited to an open discussion about

  • How things have evolved in New Zealand since the tragic and barbaric attack on Israel in October 7 and to
  • Develop and consider ideas on how we can fight antisemitism in New Zealand, better support Israel and demonstrate solidarity with all Jews

Library Services, water, tea and coffee provided.

CHRISTCHURCH: VOLUNTEERING IN ISRAEL – A REMARKABLE EXPERIENCE

You’re invited to a talk given by

Ken Maclaren

a member of NZFOI based in the Hawkes Bay

on

7.30pm, Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

Venue:

Mary Potter Community Centre

442 Durham Street North, St Albans, Christchurch 8014

Ken Maclaren first went to Israel in 1979 as an 18 year old Kibbutz volunteer. It was the first of several extended trips.

After a forty three year gap, he’s just got back from a three-month stint of volunteering in Beer’sheva.

He describes his most recent trip as a combination of fun, inspiration, surprise, surreal, informative, a touch scary, absolute horror but above all very, very normal.

Ken will talk to us about his memories, and observations, the extreme differences and reassuring similarities and messages we can share as to why Israel matters for us in New Zealand as well as the rest of the world.

Please bring a plate of finger food.  No pork or seafood ingredients, thanks!

Not everyone has email, or receives our newsletter by snail mail, so if you have friends or acquaintances that would be interested, please do let them know about this heartwarming event.
