The state of Israel mourns the death of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon who passed away on January 11, 2014
Ariel (‘Arik’) Sharon was born in 1928 in Kfar Malal. He served in the IDF for more than 30 years, retiring with the rank of Major-General.
Sharon was elected to the Knesset in December 1973, but resigned a year later, serving as security advisor to the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. He was again elected to the Knesset in 1977 and was appointed Defense Minister in 1981, serving in this post during the Lebanon War. In 1998 Ariel Sharon was appointed Foreign Minister and in 2001 he was elected as Prime Minister. In January 4, 2006, Prime Minister Sharon suffered a brain hemorrhage and never regained consciousness.
On Monday, 13 January 2014, at 09:30 Israel time, a state memorial ceremony will be held at the Knesset. Following by a funeral at the “Shikmim” Farm in the Negev where he will be buried alongside his wife Lili.

HaYovel – Invites New Zealanders to come and serve in Israel
The HaYovel team will be in Christchurch on the 21st of November for the final meeting of their nationwide tour and will be sharing about the work of HaYovel on the mountains of Samaria and how you can be a part of it.

HaYovel is an organisation based in Israel, volunteering help to Israeli vineyard growers, that provides a unique opportunity for all age groups to not only tour the land of the Bible but also to support the Jewish people in a practical way. It is so exciting to realise that by volunteering, you are actually fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 61:5b (TLB)

This is a very exciting ministry and as shared by the team in their interview on Radio Rhema on Friday morning, 300 volunteers from many different countries came and partcipated in this year’s Harvest which has just ended. CBN News also featured HaYovel on their programme on Shine TV last week which was very timely in the light of the tour.
The Shadows of Shoah Exhibition is a unique multidisciplinary artistic work communicating the gravity of the Holocaust in a deeply personal manner.
The exhibition was launched by Prime Minister John Key at a United Nations International Holocaust Remembrace Day event in January 2013. Shadows of Shoah is the work of NZ photographer and composer Perry Trotter with research and interviews by Sheree Trotter.
The exhibition will staged at NZ Portrait Gallery 25 October – 9 November 2013.

We are pleased to welcome author, Lynley Smith to address the Society on December 1.
After finding a tenuous family connection to the mysterious and captivating Jane Haining, Lynley Smith crafted Jane’s fictionalized diary, a biography of a faithful servant and Scottish missionary who died at the hands of Nazi butchers in Auschwitz Concentration Camp during World War II, in the inspirational and bittersweet From Matron to Martyr.
One of Jane Haining’s best friends was Frances Warburton Lee, who ended up in the same prison cell as Jane in Budapest. Frances moved to Christchurch after the war and settled in Christchurch.
Jane’s story has had moved the hearts of many. In December she will be speaking at the Holocaust Centre for New Zealand in Wellington. The second largest publisher in Hungary has agreed to translate and publish the story, and sell it in their numerous bookshops throughout Hungary. The Budapest Holocaust Centre also plans to launch the book in June next year.

Sukkos (Hebrew: סוכות or סֻכּוֹת sukkōt or sukkos, Feast of Booths, Feast of Tabernacles) is a biblical holiday celebrated on the 15th day of the month of Tishrei (variously from late September to late October). It is one of the three biblically mandated festivals Shalosh regalim on which Hebrews were commanded to make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. It follows the solemn holiday of Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement.
The holiday lasts seven days (eight in the diaspora). The first day (and second in the diaspora) is a sabbath-like yom tov when work is forbidden, followed by the intermediate Chol Hamoed and Shemini Atzeret. The Hebrew word sukkōt is the plural of sukkah, “booth or tabernacle”, which is a walled structure covered with schach (plant material such as leafy tree overgrowth or palm leaves).
The sukkah is intended as a reminiscence of the type of fragile dwellings in which the Israelites dwelt during their 40 years of travel in the desert after the Exodus from slavery in Egypt. Throughout the holiday, meals are eaten inside the sukkah and some people sleep there as well. On each day of the holiday, members of the household recite a blessing over the lulav (closed frond of the date palm tree, bound with boughs and branches of the willow and myrtle trees) and etrog (yellow citron) (Four species).
Hanukkah (Hebrew: חֲנֻכָּה, usually spelled חנוכה pronounced [χanuˈka] in Modern Hebrew, also romanized as Chanukkah or Chanuka), also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar.
