New Zealand names new FM critical of country’s recent Israel policy | Jerusalem Post

NZ’s new foreign minister, Winston Peters

Israel’s ties with New Zealand are set to improve following the appointment of a foreign minister in Wellington critical of its sponsorship last December of an anti-settlement UN resolution that set back ties between the two countries.

The Labor Party’s Jacinda Ardern named the New Zealand First party’s head Winston Peters as deputy prime minister and foreign minister earlier this week. After a close election, it was Peters’s decision to join a coalition with Labor and the Greens that allowed Ardern to form a government, instead of her predecessor Bill English. Ardern was sworn in as prime minister on Thursday.

Peters insisted on inserting in the coalition agreement a clause noting the “lack of process” that led to New Zealand’s sponsorship of UN Security Council Resolution 2334 last year. Peters has been critical that the decision to sponsor the resolution was not taken to the cabinet for its approval.

We would like to introduce a colloborative program whereby Marquee speakers from the Jewish world could carry out an Australasian lecture tour, covering issues relating to aspects of Jewish society that would be relevant to the rest of the world. A marquee speaker could be Douglas Murray, Alan Dershowitz or Natasha Hausdorff.
Fighting anti-semitism: The recent conflict between Israel and Gaza reminds us of the connection between Anti-Semitism and the Middle East conflict. Anti-Semitism is gathering momentum in Europe once more. The need is great if history is not to be repeated.
Anti-Semitism Monitor: We are supporting the NZ Jewish Council’s longitudinal study of Anti-Semitic attitudes in NZ society.
A scholarship for Teachers to study how to teach about the Holocaust and Anti-Semitism at Yad Vashem
