Trump calls rising violence aimed at Jews ‘horrible and painful’ – The Washington Post

President Trump, under pressure to speak out against rising anti-Semitic vandalism in the country, said Tuesday that such acts are “horrible and painful.” Trump used a morning visit to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture to offer his condemnation, saying his tour “was a meaningful reminder of why we have to fight bigotry, intolerance and hatred in all of its very ugly forms.” “The anti-Semitic threats targeting our Jewish community at community centers are horrible and are painful and a very sad reminder of the work that still must be done to root out hate and prejudice and evil,” Trump said.

Ynetnews News – The Jews and the Chinese: A connection between ‘the world’s most ancient peo…

The relationship between Israel and China is mostly business-related, quite a few Jewish communities found their place in the Asian country over the years. A new Chinese-sponsored exhibition at Bar-Ilan University documents these historical ties.

When Israeli footballer Eran Zahavi received a proposal to play in the Chinese league, he wasn’t very keen on moving there, despite the large sums of money he was offered. He deliberated for a long time, looked into other options, and even an astronomic salary was unable to make him rush into signing the contract.

Only when he traveled to the city of Guangzhou and received a promise from the Chabad emissary there, Rabbi Rosenberg, that they would make sure that he and his family had kosher food and would perform a proper Shabbat meal and Kiddush for the family every Friday evening, the footballer was persuaded to sign the multi-million-dollar contract.

The Chabad representation in China and the Zahavi example are the essence of the ties between the Far East country and Israel and the Jewish world—financial ties of businesspeople or representatives of Israeli companies, who travel there for a relocation or for short periods for business purposes. In fact, there is no real Jewish community in China today, and the needs of Jewish businesspeople are catered by Chabad houses located in strategic places near the work and business centers.

While the connection today is basically a business relationship, a review of history reveals that there were quite a few Jewish communities that found their place in China throughout the years. In recent years, the Chinese government has actually been trying to shed light on China’s Jewish past, and it even sponsored a unique exhibition at Bar-Ilan University featuring the Jewish communities that used to live in China in the past.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s invitation for the Israeli premier to the centenary celebrations of the Balfour Declaration later this year “speaks volumes” about the closeness of the two countries.

Ms May extended an invite to Mr Netanyahu during an official visit to London which concluded on Monday. “While the Palestinians want to sue Britain for the Balfour Declaration, the British prime minister is inviting the Israeli prime minister to an event to mark the 100th anniversary of the declaration. That speaks volumes,” Netanyahu said.

The Balfour Declaration, as it is known, was a 1917 letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Lord Rothschild, head of the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland, promising support for the idea of a Jewish homeland in historical Palestine as long as the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities were not “prejudiced.”

Auschwitz survivor and Scottish soldier who saved her celebrate 71st Valentine’s Day together – World – NZ Herald News

By Thomas Burrows1:10 PM Tuesday Feb 14, 2017

Hungarian Jew who survived Auschwitz and the Scottish soldier who helped save her will mark their 71st Valentine’s Day together tomorrow.

John Mackay, 96, was in the ranks of a commando team that liberated a number of Jewish prisoners from their Nazi guards in Poland.

The prisoners, who were held in Auschwitz at the time when ‘Angel of Death’ Josef Mengele was conducting his evil experiments, were being marched to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany to face summary execution in the death throes of the Third Reich.

Hidden in the mass of prisoners was 20-year-old Hungarian Jew Edith Steiner, alongside her mother – the only two members of their family not sent to the gas chambers. After they were saved Edith – known to friends as Eci – caught 23-year-old Mr Mackay’s eye at a village hall dance to celebrate their liberation.

Mr Mackay, whose own wartime exploits in the London Scottish 1st Battalion included escaping from an Italian POW camp dressed as an enemy soldier, spotted Miss Steiner at the dance but was too shy to approach her.

He sent a friend over to ask if she would dance with him, but Miss Steiner insisted she would only dance with him if he plucked up the courage himself.

He did, and what followed was a whirlwind romance that saw her and her mother whisked back to Mr Mackay’s native Scotland.

A New Cave, an Old Controversy: Dramatic New Discovery in Israel will Re-Ignite Debates

By Craig A. Evans

The last Dead Sea Scrolls cave, linked to the ruins on the marl shelf at the mouth of Wadi Qumran, was discovered in 1956, bringing the total number of caves to eleven — eleven caves containing the famous Dead Sea Scrolls, ceramic jars, and a number of other artifacts.

For sixty years archaeologists and looters have been searching for a twelfth cave.

Would another one ever be found? Most didn’t think so. This is what makes the announcement from Hebrew University so astounding: A twelfth cave has been discovered!

Pop singer Natalie Imbruglia nixes Israel concert – Israel News – Jerusalem Post

Pop singer Natalie Imbruglia on Sunday cancelled her upcoming Tel Aviv concert due what event organizers said were “logistic constraints.”

Anti-Israel German politician compares Jewish Facebook head with NaziImbruglia apologized for disappointing her fans in Israel and vowed to schedule a show in country at a future date. Concert producers said refunds would be given to all ticket holders.

Meanwhile, Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement activists claimed the cancellation as a success, citing a campaign to pressure Imbruglia by an anti-Israeli organization named “Don’t Play Apartheid Israel.” The organization’s campaign went as far as creating a Facebook page dedicated to convincing the Australian-British singer-songwriter not to give a show in the country.

The group claimed the campaign had persuaded Imbruglia to cancel the show after Israel passed the controversial Settlements Law last Monday, retroactively legalizing 4,000 settler homes that were built on privately-owned Palestinian land.

The organization, which called Israel an ‘apartheid state,’ expressed its satisfaction and support following Imbruglia’s apparent cancellation.

Despite Imbruglia’s cancellation, multiple musicians are expected to grace Israeli stages this coming summer, with powerhouse bands such as The Pixies and Radiohead expected to arrive later in the year for big concerts.

French MP to Le Pen: Israel is ‘life insurance’ for Jews, we won’t renounce citizenship – Diaspora – Jerusalem Post

MP Meyer Habib blasts as unconstitutional, the far-right politician’s proposal to ban dual-citizenship – including French-Israeli.

A French Jewish MP on Sunday reminded presidential candidate Marine Le Pen of “Europe’s unremitting debt to the Jewish people” after the far-right politician raised objections to dual-citizenship, which, if enforced, would require French Israelis to choose between the two countries.

“You can’t ask Jews to choose between their mother and father,” Meyer Habib, who represents expats in Israel and other Mediterranean countries, told The Jerusalem Post while slamming the proposal as unconstitutional.

The case dates back to March 2013, when two fans of the Lazio soccer team were caught on camera during a match between Lazio and Catania chanting “giallorosso ebreo,” Italian for “yellow-red Jew.”

ROME – An Italian judge sparked anger by ruling that soccer fans chanting a slogan featuring the word “Jews” was not hate speech. In a letter to Italy’s Justice Minister Andrea Orlando, the president of the Rome Jewish community, Ruth Dureghello called the ruling earlier this month “undoubtedly an alarming precedent for justice” in Italy that “in essence legitimizes the use of the adjective Jew in a derogatory and racist form and in any case a tool of derision during sporting events.”
