Palestinian gunman wounds 6 Israelis in attack near market

Petah Tikvah Market, in more peaceful times

JERUSALEM (AP) ” A Palestinian opened fire and stabbed shoppers with a screwdriver near a busy open air market in central Israel on Thursday, wounding at least six people, police said.

Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police confirmed it was a “terror attack” and that the 18-year-old Palestinian from the West Bank was arrested soon after the shooting in Petah Tikva.

Israeli media reported that the Palestinian attacker fired at a bus and toward shoppers buying groceries at the market ahead of the Jewish Sabbath, before running down the street. He continued shooting as civilians gave chase.

New Zealand academics think NZ should have pressed for sanctions against Israel

NZ Herald, Wednesday 8 Feb 2016:  A number of New Zealand’s leading academics on conflict resolution have slammed the country’s “dangerous double standard” on the Israel- Palestine problem.

In an open letter to Foreign Minister Murray McCully, the academics say New Zealand needs to take a firm stance on the long-running conflict in the Middle East and show leadership.

It comes in the wake of a United Nations Security Council resolution – co-sponsored by New Zealand – which stated Israel’s settlement activity was a “flagrant violation” of international law and had no legal validity.

The letter praises McCully’s leadership in pushing for the resolution, particularly in the face of pressure from Israeli president Benjamin Netanyahu to withdraw it from the UNSC’s table.

However, the Government’s position did not go far enough, they said, and slammed a “dangerous double standard” in supporting the resolution but failing to impose sanctions on Israel or its products made in illegal settlements. This while there were “serious tax-payer funded sanctions” on Palestinian groups involved in violence.

Rewriting the History of Jerusalem – WSJ

This week in Paris, the executive board of Unesco, the United Nations entity charged with looking after matters related to education, science and culture, will vote on a resolution called “Occupied Palestine,” which attempts to redefine the capital of Israel as a supranational city to which Muslims, Christians and Jews have equal claim.

Perhaps not coincidentally, an exhibition currently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City makes the same case. For the sake of Jerusalem, both need to be exposed as the attempts at historical revisionism that they are.

Israeli leader blasts UN resolution on Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (AP)

“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says a resolution adopted by the U.N. cultural agency denies the Jewish connection to holy sites in Jerusalem and is a “theatre of the absurd.”

The UNESCO resolution, sponsored by several Arab countries, marginalizes Jewish ties to the Western Wall, a remnant of the biblical temple compound, and to the plaza that Jews revere as the Temple Mount and Muslims revere as the Noble Sanctuary.

Netanyahu asks on his Facebook page: “Is it any wonder the U.N. has become a moral farce when UNESCO, the U.N. body tasked with preserving history, denies and distorts history?”

Radio New Zealand Airs Unbalanced Anti-Israel Tirade

radio-new-zealand-770x400

RNZ has once again aired a litany of unchallenged lies in a one-sided discussion of a contentious issue.

On October 6, the ‘Women’s Boat to Gaza’ was intercepted by the Israeli Defence Forces. This has become an annual occurrence since the first attempt by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition to breach Israel’s naval blockade on Gaza, which was imposed after a particularly intense period of rocket attacks on Israeli civilians.
