DAVID CUMIN: ANTISEMITISM IN NEW ZEALAND
RSVP TO events@holocaustcentre.org.nz to be sent Zoom link for this event
As Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks has noted, antisemitism has mutated from pogroms against Jews based on religious hate in medieval times, to attempted ethnic cleansing in the early 20th century, to modern-day attacks against Jews excused by alleged actions of Israel.
However, the old strains of the oldest hatred have persisted to varying degrees. In the past year, alone, we have seen murderous attacks on Jews by Islamists; mass killings and attempts at the same from neo-Nazis; and ongoing misinformation campaigns against Israel that are sometimes accompanied by threats and acts of violence against Jews.
Unfortunately, New Zealand is not immune from antisemitism, just as it is not immune from any other form of prejudice. Indeed, many of the dangerous trends from overseas seem to be coming to Aotearoa at an increased pace.
This talk will take a closer look at how antisemitism manifests in New Zealand – from the racism of anonymous keyboard warriors to politicians – and explore how we might repel the worst of it that might be yet to come.
Dr David Cumin has been involved with the Jewish Community Security Group, reporting on and combatting antisemitism in New Zealand since 2001. He also serves on the New Zealand Jewish Council and is a co-director of the Israel Institute of New Zealand.
