With little to lose, Gaza’s men drawn to border protests | NZ Herald

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Marwan Shtewi is poor, unemployed and at the age of 32 has never even left the Gaza Strip.

With few prospects and little to fear, Shtewi is among the crowds of young men who put themselves on the front lines of violent protests along the border with Israel, risking their lives in a weekly showdown meant to draw attention to the dire conditions of Gaza.

While protest organizers voice slogans of defending Jerusalem and returning to the lost homes of their forefathers in Israel, it is the desperation among young men like Shtewi that has been the driving force in the demonstrations. Recovering from a gunshot wound to his arm that sent shrapnel into his abdomen, Shtewi says his protest days are now behind him and he only dreams of finally finding a job.

“I want to see peace and hope and prosperity spread in Gaza when I get out of the hospital,” he said from his hospital bed.

New Zealand to call in Israeli ambassador over Gaza deaths | NZ Herald

Jacinda Adern, PM of New Zealand

The Israeli Ambassador will be called in again this week by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to raise concern about the deaths of more than 50 people in Gaza and wounding of 2700 while protesting the move of the US Embassy to Jerusalem.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said yesterday Mfat met with Ambassador Itzhak Gerberg in the past fortnight and would call him in again after Israeli forces killed more than 50 people.

The deaths were on the same day the US opened its embassy in Jerusalem after US President Donald Trump’s decision to move it from Te Aviv, recognising it as Israel’s capital.

Ardern said such a move was always going to inflame the situation given Jerusalem was critical for hopes of a “two-state” solution to succeed.

Eight-month-old Leila, Palestinian martyr and political poster child : Stuff

Leila al-Ghandour’s little face peeked out as her father carried her body from the mosque, wrapped in a white funeral shroud and the green, black and red Palestinian flag.
Her uncles and male cousins passed her small corpse between them as they marched through the streets of the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City towards the graveyard. With each step they chanted their praise of God and their defiance of Israel.
According to her family, the eight-month-old was killed after inhaling a cloud of Israeli tear gas during Monday’s bloody protests on the border. They said her 12-year-old uncle had become confused and accidentally brought the baby to within yards of the barbed wire fence that Israel has vowed to defend with tear gas and snipers’ bullets.

Hamas Co-Founder: Calling Gaza Riots ‘Peaceful Resistance’ Is ‘Deceiving the Public’ | Algemeiner

A senior Hamas leader said on Sunday that recent Palestinian riots on the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip were backed by the Islamist group’s weapons and fighters.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Hamas co-founder Mahmoud al-Zahhar called allegations that the terrorist group was employing “peaceful resistance” against Israel “a clear terminological deception.”

“When you have weapons that are being wielded by men who were able to prevent the strongest army in the region from entering the Gaza strip for 51 days, and were able to capture or kill soldiers of that army — is this really ‘peaceful resistance?” asked al-Zahhar, whose remarks were translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

“When we talk about ‘peaceful resistance,’ we are deceiving the public,” he said. “This is peaceful resistance bolstered by a military force and by security agencies, and enjoying tremendous popular support.”

New Zealand has conveyed its condemnation of Israel’s actions along the Gaza border directly to its ambassador here, describing the loss of life as “devastating and one-sided”.

In the deadliest day of violence since the 2014 Gaza War, Israeli forces have killed at least 52 Palestinians and wounded 2400.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians had been protesting along the Gaza border against the opening of the United States embassy in Jerusalem.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on behalf of the government, raised concerns directly to the ambassador in New Zealand.

The violence showed that the decision by the US to open the new embassy was counter to efforts to find a peaceful resolution in the region, she said.

Green Party condemns slaughter in Gaza

Marama Davidson

The Green Party is strongly condemning the slaughter perpetrated by the Israeli armed forces in Gaza overnight following the opening of the new United States Embassy in Jerusalem, which has resulted in the murder of at least 52 civilians and over 2400 injured.

This is the second deadly massacre of protestors perpetrated by the Israeli armed forces this year and is the deadliest onslaught in Gaza since 2014.

“As predicted the opening of Donald Trump’s confrontational Embassy in Jerusalem has fanned flames of conflict and death,” said Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson.

“Rather than being a step towards peace the Embassy opening has acted as a flash point in the conflict and has been used by the Israeli government to justify their massacre of Palestinians.

“Jerusalem is an internationally recognised disputed territory, and the fair division of it will be a component of any enduring peace deal. The United States setting up an Embassy there purposefully undermines the Palestinian position and makes peace less likely.

“This slaughter is all the evidence we need that Trump’s move makes peace less likely and makes life for those living in Gaza more dangerous.

“Israel’s ongoing siege on Gaza constitutes a breach of international law and has caused an unsustainable humanitarian crisis since 2009. The people of Gaza are a trapped population with no access to humanitarian aid or access to adequate healthcare or education.

“The Green Party is calling on Israel to end its siege on Gaza and its occupation of Palestinian Territories, and take positive steps towards an enduring peace in the region.”

Embassy of Israel in Wellington – Gaza border

H.E. Ambassador Gerberg

Press Release Embassy of Israel in Wellington – Gaza border

Make no mistakes – There is no valid connection between the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem and the weeks’ old Hamas-orchestrated violent confrontation campaign already taking place in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas, an internationally recognized terror organization (also by New Zealand), has ruled Gaza since 2007 and instead of caring for the welfare of the Gaza population, has invested in a large-scale terror infrastructure and has cynically fanned the flames of the conflict while initiating violent provocations against Israel.

Israel has the right and the duty to protect its sovereignty, its borders and its citizens. Accordingly, that message of self-defense has been conveyed to the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Any imposed solution cannot work. The only path to reach a peaceful solution to this conflict is through direct negotiations.

End.

NZFOI urges Hamas to withdraw from border

PRESS RELEASE

15 May 2018, Christchurch.  Today unconfirmed reports have been published stating that up to 58 people have been killed by Israeli Defence Forces as a Gazan crowd of protesters numbering several tens of thousands, stormed the border dividing Gaza from Israel.

NZ Friends of Israel is deeply saddened by the deaths of protestors, the pain it must cause their families and friends, and the waste of life this represents.

NZ Friends of Israel Association Inc calls upon Hamas to stop urging their supporters to tear down the security fence.  By doing so it is irresponsibly putting its people in harm’s way.

The security fence separates two societies that have a history characterised by acts of deadly violence towards one another.  Urging its tens of thousands of supporters to storm the security fence could only lead to a deadly result.

There have been reports that the protests are a direct result of the harsh conditions brought about by the Gaza Blockade currently maintained by Israel and Egypt.

This blockade was caused by the election of Hamas, an organisation that has publicly stated that the destruction of the State of Israel is its principal goal.  Hamas has also aligned itself with insurgents within Egypt, causing that country to join the blockade.

The preservation of life must take precedence therefore we urge Hamas to act quickly and withdraw its protestors from the immediate area of the border fence.

NZ Friends of Israel is a charity that fights racism and intolerance through raising awareness of Jewish history and culture.

UN Security Council to meet over the deadliest day in Gaza since 2014 war | TVNZ

The UN Security Council plans to meet overnight NZT to discuss violence along the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip, following the deadliest day there since a 2014 war.

Kuwait called for the session after more than 50 Palestinians were killed and over 1,200 wounded by Israeli gunfire amid mass protests on Monday.
Israel said its troops were defending its border and accused Hamas militants of trying to attack under the cover of the protest.

It was not immediately clear what might come out of the council session. No joint statement or action followed a similar meeting after protests in March, and two UN diplomats said members couldn’t reach unanimous agreement on Monday on issuing a proposed statement circulated by Kuwait.

The draft statement, obtained by The Associated Press, would have expressed “outrage and sorrow” at the killings, sought an “independent and transparent investigation” and called on all sides to exercise restraint.

Israel’s use of live fire in Gaza protests faces legal test | NZ Herald

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s Supreme Court on Monday heard the first legal challenge of the military’s open-fire rules, after 39 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,700 wounded by Israeli fire during mass protests on the Gaza border over the past month.

The hearing came amid growing international criticism of Israel for its use of lethal force and a mounting casualty toll since the weekly protests, organized by Gaza’s ruling Hamas, began in late March. Organizers say the mass demonstrations are to continue for at least two more weeks, with some threatening a mass border breach.
